Meet Unilag first class graduate who spent 12 years at home before admission

Against all odds, Negedu Sunday, son of a beans cake seller and tailor, scaled through all hurdles to graduate with a first class in Biochemistry from University of Lagos.

 Negedu, who spent 12 years at home after completing his secondary school education could not further despite getting admission into university six times due to lack of money.

In an interview with Punch newspaper, Negedu, who graduated with 4.70 CGPA, talked about his struggle and how he made a vow to graduate with a first class.

He said: "As a child, life was tough. I grew up in Olodi-Apapa/Ajegunle area of Lagos. I’m the second out of seven children and my parents had deep love for education, even though they didn’t have much of it.

"My mum used to sell bean cake (akara) while my dad was a tailor. He had to take up another job as a housekeeper/store-keeper in a hotel. They worked so hard to care for us.

Even though there were vices in the neighbourhood, my parents were disciplinarians and they made sure we found reading attractive. And of course I won’t forget the deep financial hardship we went through; days I went to school bare-footed."

On why he choose to study Biochemistry instead of Medicine that he had always profess love for, Negedu said spending twelve years at home changed his mind.

He said: "Growing up, I had this dream to be a medical doctor and later to become a neurosurgeon. But 12 years after graduating from secondary school and after my sixth Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, choosing Biochemistry was the logical thing to do.

"It wasn’t that I didn’t pass the UTMEs, I did, but my admission suffered huge setbacks owing to lack of fund.

"At a point, I was somewhat persuaded that I needed to do a four-year course in order to graduate early (compared to the six years for medicine) so I could support my parents, siblings and others in need."

Negedu also spoke about how hard it was to maintain his first class throughout university.

He said: "I had a study plan, I prioritised my courses and studied very well. Beyond these, I prayed about everything, took responsibility for myself and actions, studied hard, remained focused and I learnt from others.

"I won a number of awards in school, including the HOD of Science Prize and the prestigious Professor Akinrimisi Prize of Excellence in Biochemistry. I believe some students fail due to lack of commitment, indiscipline, not identifying what works for them, seeking help late or not seeking help at all and lack of confidence. These issues can be tackled by any willing mind."

Negodu just completed his M.Sc in Biochemistry and his making effort toward a Ph.D scholarship position while he continued his job as a graduate assistant in UNILAG.

On his dream for the future, Negedu said: "My passion is to be a molecular/biomedical researcher. I want to do more than just teach. My other interests are in volunteering and writing."

Pregnant Nigerian lady dies after allegedly using the TOILET (photos)

A Nigerian lady, Kosolu Ndulue, has announced the death of her dear friend, Keke Esu, who was pregnant at the time of her death.
it was shared by Ndulue on Facebook.According to Ndulue, the pregnant lady had passed away in her sleep after she woke up and went to use the toilet.
The Facebook user, who expressed sadness over her friend’s death, explained that she and her friend had gotten married on the same day.

Startling revelations as police, Delta people await autopsy result of deceased politician

As the police and the people of Sapele await the result of the autopsy being conducted to ascertain the cause of death of Chief Lucky Ayomanor, Delta state police command has made startling statement regarding the dealings of the police with the deceased chief at the point of arrest in Gana, Sapele on Wednesday night.

In an exclusive chat with the police public relations officer, Andrew Ani Amaka, he told that the late chief attempted bribing the mobile police officers who accosted him on the way and decided to give them bribe of N200,000 and even decided to make it up to N500,000 so that he could be let go having been discovered with a pump action gun.

Aniamaka further said this group of police officers who rejected the N200,000 offered by the late chief also rejected N2million earlier offered to them days by other persons prior to the encounter they had with the deceased chief Lucky Ayomanor.
He said the offer of bribe to the police officers was an indication that something was wrong with the chief, a development which prompted the officers to insist on taking him to the police station for further interrogation on his possession of a pump action gun.

According to him: “He was driving in his jeep from where he was arrested to the police station. In fact, he offered the officers money so that they could forgo the arrest. But they declined the offer.

“It was while they were driving to the police station they noticed he was breathing differently, that is why I was saying could it be he was frightened? Was it that he became nervous? Was it that he already had problem with his health prior to the arrest? The family should know his case history.
But very likely, he may have died of natural cause or it was just a thing waiting to happen. Whatever we are doing, we should not be engaged in sentiments or be ruled by emotions but by facts.

“There have been so many assumptions such as was it that he died out of suffocation? Don’t forget that the vehicle we are talking about is a Volvo, a jeep.

“It’s not like my own motor that you can say has a booth, booth is ruled. So, dying out of suffocation is also ruled out.”
He further said his family members should be willing to speak the truth and know whether he had health issues and should be able to speak out “so that we do not make wrong assumptions.”

On the detention of the four police officers who are involved in the case, Aniamaka gave various reason why an officer or an individual could be detained.

He said: “Now why would anybody be put in custody? The fact remains that an individual whoever could be put in custody for a number of reasons. One of such reasons could be to douse already growing tension.

“If it is alleged that you did something wrong and to calm down the situation, one can decide to have you incarcerated or detained if only to douse that tension. That could be a reason.

“It could also be done because if that person is let loose, that person could jeopardize or tamper with evidence. Now, another factor could be to protect that person. Such detention is called protective custody. When sanity returns, he could be allowed to go.

“You could for so many reasons have somebody in custody. Now, whether the police chose to have those people in custody or not, it is immaterial. What is important is that the case is under investigation. Autopsy is being carried out by experts and we are awaiting the results.”
He said it is expected that the autopsy will be conducted by pathologists from the family members with those in the hospital while the police may also provide a pathologist who will serve as observer.

He said: “In such situation, what we want is objective inquiry into the nature of death. A number of things have been known to have taken the life of the man.”

He commended the effort of the mobile police who were deployed to the area to curb crime, noting that deployment of the police to the Gana area of Sapele had curb crime in the zone.

He said prior to the deployment of the officers to the area, there were incessant cases of kidnapping and robbery, adding that with the deployment of the officers to the area, crime rate had reduced drastically in Sapele.

Dad jailed 10 days for leaving baby in the car to get Lap dances in Strip club

A California father accused of leaving his baby in the car to get Lap dances at a Strip Club has been jailed for 10days. Auwin Dargin who appeared before a Los Angeles court on Wednesday was on the 9th of March, 2016, arrested for leaving his 9month old baby daughter in a car for 43 minutes while he visited Synn Gentlemen’s Club in North Hills to buy lap dances, according to prosecutors.
The court also heard that the employees of the club and neighboring businesses discovered the sweating and crying baby girl inside the vehicle about 2 p.m. and rescued her before they contacted the police.
In a news release from the office of Los Angeles County District Attorney, the 26-year-old father pleaded no contest to a felony count of child abuse. He was sentenced to 10 days in county jail and five years probation. He was also ordered to complete 52 weeks of parenting classes, as well as 45 days of Caltrans service.

During Friday night’s show, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed was asked “Which country makes the best Jollof rice,” and he responded with “I’ll have to say Senegal”.
Senegal?!” Quest said. “I hear a shock across the country, I hear a sigh across the country. Minister, thank you very much,” he added.
Quest has however said that the minister misheard. “He thought I asked, who first created jollof rice – hence his (correct) answer Senegal,” Quest wrote on Twitter.

Femi Adesina Rules Out Possibility of President Buhari’s Resignation over his Health

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to President Muhammadu Buhari has ruled out the possibility of his principal’s resignation over his health condition.
Adesina who said those making the call are “merely expressing their opinions,” made this known while speaking to journalists at the public presentation of the book “Against the Run of Play; How an Incumbent President was Defeated in Nigeria,” written by Olusegun Adeniyi, Chairman, ThisDay Editorial Board and former Special Adviser, Media to late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
“Saying the president should resign is an opinion but don’t forget that 15 million people elected the president so if one or two people express their opinion, will their opinion override that of 15 million people that voted for him? Those who are expressing their opinion have rights to their opinion,” DailyPost quoted Adesina as saying.
On the state of Buhari’s health, he said: “There is no need for apprehension, God spared the president the first time. Remember he said that he has never been as ill as he was before. The same God that spared him will also ensure that he returns to full health. Nigerians prayed and God answered, Nigerians are still praying and God will still answer.”
President Buhari has missed the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for the last three weeks. He was absent the two times it held in that period and the third (last week’s meeting) did not hold due to the Easter holiday.
He was also absent during Friday’s Jumat prayers at the State House mosque.
His spokesman, Garba Shehu had said that the president is taking things slowly, following the advice of his doctors so that he can recover fully from treatment he underwent in London.

Lagos State Government to Dethrone Traditional rulers found aiding Kidnappers

The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami said during the ministerial briefing in commemoration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s second year in office that the state will dethrone any traditional ruler found aiding kidnappers in the state
“Intelligence reveals that some of these Baales, particularly from Ikorodu and Ishawo collaborate with the miscreants to kidnap innocent souls. Yesterday, I told them to their faces this might lead to dethroning and we will do just that if investigations reveal that you are part of the criminality,” Folami said.
According to NAN, the State Government in an attempt to solve security issues had acquired five hectares of land for the permanent settlement of the security operatives in Igbodu community in Epe. He also urged residents to partner with the government in fighting kidnapping and also advised them to be more vigilant.
Folami said that the establishment of a virile and vibrant system of community associations had over the years enabled the government to partner with communities, sensitize them on its priorities and receive feedback on public policies.
He said that community development is one of the primary goals of this administration and this is not possible without peace and harmony.

Ilie Nastase apologises to Serena Williams over Racist Comment

Romanian tennis legend Ilie Nastase has apologized for derogatory comments about Serena Williams and for a foul-mouthed Fed Cup tirade that saw him suspended by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

He said that his comments last Friday about the pregnant Williams talking about her baby being “chocolate with milk” was a “spontaneous” reaction to hearing she was expecting her first child.

Tennis has been, and is, my life, and for tennis I have sacrificed almost everything, personal or professional. Unfortunately, now, in my 70s, I have somehow managed to do something I have never wanted or even imagined: to feel tennis moving further away from me.
